Mediation is rapidly becoming the preferred method for parties to resolve lawsuits and disputes. If you are an attorney, accountant, businessperson, law enforcement, education, mental health or other professional and want to become a qualified civil and commercial mediator and receive training from New Jersey’s premier association of professional mediators, you should take one of the following courses.

 

40-Hour Civil Training Course

Time: 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM each day

Dates: In Person and Online- Fall 2024: December 8, 9, 15, 16, 17

2 Sundays, 2 Mondays and a Tuesday. 

The course fee is $1,495. Payment in full is required to reserve your spot in the course.

Key elements:

Technique: Understand what mediation is and what good mediation skills are. Learn various techniques to use during mediation and when to use them.

Process: How a mediation is conducted from beginning to end. Receive practice forms and documents which you can customize for your own use.

Case Management: Understand how a mediation’s case flow works and ensure your clients are properly prepared for the mediation session.

Marketing: Learn about mediation opportunities and how to prospect for clients.

PROGRAM FEATURES

  • Multi‐disciplinary faculty: The faculty is composed of experienced mediators who are also attorneys, business persons and other professionals. This multi‐disciplinary faculty will expose you to different mediation approaches and styles. You will be a better mediator by learning from this diverse faculty.
  • Small classes: Classes are limited to a maximum of 24 students. You will be able to better participate in the extensive role‐plays and receive individualized attention from the faculty and mentors.
  • Low student‐teacher ratio: Each mediation role play group will have a coach for personalized feedback.

CREDITS (CLE & CPE)

This course is approved by the New Jersey Courts to satisfy the training requirements for admission to the Civil Mediation Roster. This course is also approved for 48 credit hours NJ CLEs (4.8 for ethics). NY and PA attorneys may be able to apply NJ credits in those states. Please see here and Section 12 for more details and to determine if these credits will successfully transfer to NY or PA. CPE credits on request.

REGISTRATION

The course fee is $1,495.  Payment in full is required to reserve your spot in the class.  Course fee includes course materials (except the course textbook, which you buy on your own), breakfast and lunch on in-person days, and NJAPM membership through the end of September 2025 (current members will receive a year of extended membership).

Any cancelation by a student after fees are paid will be subject to a $300 cancelation fee. No refunds issued after the program starts.   NJAPM reserves the right to cancel the training and return all fees.

The first and last day of the course is being held in person while the rest of the course is online via Zoom.  To be awarded your completion certificate, you will be required to attend all sessions, with your camera on during teaching times for the online days.

The first and last day will be held at the Rutgers Labor Education Center, 50 Labor Center Way, New Brunswick, NJ. This is located near the intersection of Routes 1 and 18, near exit 9 on the NJ Turnpike.

Maximum of 24 students in a class. This course was oversold the last time it was offered. Register early to avoid being waitlisted or shut out.

NJAPM does not control admission to any mediation roster. While NJAPM’s course will meet the training requirements for most rosters, it is your responsibility to make sure you meet all requirements. Please review complete roster qualifications for any mediation roster you seek admission to.

RECOMMENDED OPTIONAL COURSES:

·       Law for Non-Attorneys : mediators cannot be effective without speaking the language of their clients.  Learn basic civil court procedure, legal terminology and strategy.

·       Mediation Apprenticeship : develop your mediation skills and gain experience by mediating actual court cases in special civil part under the supervision of an accredited mediator.

6-Hour Supplemental Civil Mediation  Training 

JANUARY 21, 2025 (8:30 AM TO 3:30 PM)

Seeking admission to the New Jersey Superior Court’s civil mediation rosters but you received your training more than five years ago or received your 40-hours of basic training out of the state of New Jersey?  Are you a member of the court’s Family Mediation Roster and want to join the court’s Civil Mediation Roster?  Take this course.

NJ Court Rule 1:40-12(b)8 provides that candidates for the court’s civil mediation rosters who received their training out of state or more than five years ago take a 6-hour supplemental civil mediation training course approved by the court. Rule 1:40-12(b)1 allows for a member of the Family Mediation Roster to take the 6-hour civil supplemental training (along with the mentoring requirement) to join the Civil Mediation Roster.

This training class will fulfill these requirements, and can also meet the AOC's four-hour annual CE requirement for those already on the roster (pursuant to Rule 1:40-12(b)2). The only prerequisite for this class is that you must have taken a 40-hour basic civil mediation training course.

Registration Information

The course fee is $335.

Course fee includes course materials.

Any cancelation by a student received within 7 days of the course date will be subject to a 25% fee.  

We reserve the right to cancel the training and return all fees.

The course will be held online via Zoom.  The course includes a 40-minute lunch period with two 10-minute breaks.  Your camera will be required to be on during the class.

This course is approved by the New Jersey Courts to satisfy the civil supplemental training requirement under Rule 1:40-12(b)8.  Approval for 7.2 Hours of NJ CLEs (2.4 for ethics) is pending.  CPE credits available on request. Approved for 6.0 NJAPM credits.
