New Jersey Association of Professional Mediators (NJAPM) is pleased to notify you of our Sixth Annual Civil and Divorce Mediation Seminar, 2020/New Decade/New Mediation Perspectives, scheduled for Saturday, April 25, 2020 from 8:15 AM to 4:05 PM at the Rutgers Atrium in Somerset, New Jersey.  The seminar is open to all interested parties.

 

After a light breakfast, and a welcome by this year's co-chairs, Anju D. Jessani and Katherine Newcomer, NJAPM President, Gabielle Strich, will provide an organizational update.   Also in the morning plenary session, two leading experts will conduct interactive presentations:

  • Andrew Smith, Featured Speaker will present: Putting your mediation practice to the test.  Andrew served as president of NJAPM from 2014-2016, and has a diverse background as an attorney, mediator, arbitrator, engineer, teacher, business and technology leader.   • Brad Heckman, Expert Speaker will present: Transferring and translating mediation/peace building skills from the international arena to New Jersey’s mediation services.  Brad is CEO of the New York Peace Institute, one of the nation's largest conflict resolution services.  He is also an Adjunct Professor at NYU’s Center for Global Affairs, where he teaches courses on international conflict resolution and organizational development. Following  a networking lunch, we will have two sessions of breakout afternoon.  Civil mediation workshops will be introduced by Felicia Farber, and divorce mediation workshops will be introduced by Lynn Norcia.

  • Civil Workshop - Managing your 1:40 Civil Case more effectively from initial referral to getting paid: Felicia Farber, Andrew Smith and Michele Cresti

  • Divorce Hot Topics, Part 1 (25 Min. Presentations + 5 Q&A for each topic):  The new NJ court program on Economic Mediation for domestic violence cases, and a review of DV rules for private cases in your mediation practice: Judge Lawrence Jones and Christine Heer, and Legal Weed, family law and mediation: Pamela Copeland

Second Set of Workshops: Choose Civil or Divorce Track

  • Civil Workshop: Minkowitz v Israeli (2013), mediation/arbitration rules, the new NJ arbitration law, and practice opportunities/implications: Gabrielle Strich

Or

  • Divorce Hot Topics, Part 2 (25 Minute Presentations + 5 Minutes Q&A for each topic):  Relocation issues in mediation including intrastate moves (AJ v RJ 2019): Lynn Norcia, and the Top 5 financial errors in divorce mediation: Amber Leach

The seminar will close with a plenary ethics presentation with Robert Lenrow and TBA panelists on When should a mediated agreement be binding: Reconciling the Standards of Conduct for Mediators, Willingboro, and reality.

Cancellation Policy

  • A full refund less a $20 administrative processing fee before April 7 (so no penalty for early registration as you get a discount).  After April 7, there will be a full refund less a $50 administrative processing fee.  There will be a 50% refunds for cancellations within 24 hours of the event.  Barring exceptional situations, there will be no refunds for no shows on the day of the event, but we will send you conference materials and access to the conference DropBox.
